Sponge Calcite Candleholders are Fantastic for Fall

Decorate your tables and shelves this fall with nature’s most interesting home decor accents.  Sponge calcite makes a great tea light candleholder with a truly unique appearance.  The natural openings allow light to shine through the entire candleholder.  Tea light candle included. Sizes and shapes vary but are typically 2-3” high and 4-5” diameter.

Calcareous sea sponges have skeletons made entirely of calcite and can occur in several shapes such as single or multiple tubes.  Calcite sea sponges are usually found on the bottom of the continental shelf where the waters are warm and shallow but can be found in deeper portions of the sea preferring calm water and shaded areas, including caves.  Most calcite sea sponges are a dull color of beige or white and are not large, typically less than one foot in height.  Colorful sea sponges of yellow, green and red can sometimes be found but are not common.  Because they are made of calcite, these sponges would be fairly soft, a 3 on the Mohs Hardness Scale which ranges from 1 to 10 and should be handled carefully.

Fish Eye Stone Jewelry is Great for Fall Outfits

Fish Eye is another name given to a group of minerals known collectively as Apophyllite.  Apophyllite is a hydrothermal mineral which is found in openings in igneous rocks, such as basalt.  Fish Eye stones are usually white, blue, green, brown, purple, pink and/or yellow.  The mineral typically does not form distinct crystals shapes but rather forms in masses.  Fish Eye is soft, being a 4 to 5 on the Mohs Hardness Scale which has a range from 1 (softest) to 10 (hardest), has a glassy to pearly luster and a white streak.  Although many people have not heard of apophyllite minerals, they are fairly common in locations such as Canada, India, Brazil, Scotland and the United States among others.
